FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Am I eligible to apply?
There are several general eligibility criteria. Please read them carefully.

    (a) Applicants must be of Greek descent or a student who has declared major(s) in Hellenic Studies (regardless of heritage)

    (b) Undergraduate Scholarships require that in the following academic year, applicants must be a full time undergraduate student pursuing studies leading to a bachelor’s degree in an accredited four-year college, university, or professional school. This includes current undergraduate students who will not be graduating during the academic year and high school seniors applying to such schools.

    (c) Graduate Scholarships require that in the next academic year, applicants must be enrolled in a full-time graduate program.
    (d) High school seniors and applicants to graduate schools can apply for scholarships even if at the time of application submission do not know which institution they will attend. Applicants are required to update us when they make their final decision.

    (e) According to our Club’s bylaws and agreements with Donors, our scholarships are available only to US citizens or green card holders. Holders of student visas are not eligible for our scholarships.

    (f) The applicant’s permanent address must be in one of the counties below:
Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton or Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania; Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean or Salem Counties in New Jersey; New Castle County in Delaware.
Only exception to the permanent address rule is for applicants of the Eleftheria scholarship which has no residency requirement.
Permanent address is the parents’ home for all undergraduate students.
Graduate students may elect to use their school address as their permanent address if they submit taxes on their own.

    (g) Prior recipients of Hellenic University Club Undergraduate Scholarships can only reapply for an Undergraduate Scholarship after three years. E.g. if an Undergraduate Scholarship was received in 2020, the applicant is eligible to reapply only in 2023 or later.
    (h) Prior recipients of Hellenic University Club Undergraduate or Graduate Scholarships can reapply for a Graduate Scholarship any year. E.g., if an Undergraduate Scholarship was received in 2020, and the applicant is expect to be a graduate student in 2021-22 then the applicant can apply again in 2021.
    (j) For prior recipients who reapply, we are looking for an updated application that focuses on the relevant experiences and achievements during the time interval since the previous HUC scholarship received. Ideally, we would like to see in which ways the HUC scholarships affected the applicants’ studies, way of thinking, and actions.

  2. There are specific requirements for some of the scholarships
Some of the scholarships have specific requirements (family origin, field of study etc.) and may require more documentation to be submitted. Please read the application carefully.

  3. What is the definition of financial need?

This is a difficult question as the exact limit depends on the university that the applicant is (or will be) attending.
To be considered for scholarships with a financial need requirement, applicants must complete a FAFSA application at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. Once the report of the application, please locate the Estimated Student Aid Index (SAI)*. Upload this information in our scholarship application.
Applicants are urged to submit the FAFSA information, if the SAI is lower than the cost of attendance (tuition + room and board) of their university. When in doubt please submit that information anyway.   The committee will consider individual circumstances and make the final decision for eligibility for these scholarships that need demonstration of financial need.

  4. When will the decision be made?

We expect to make a decision by early May. We will notify the applicants accordingly. Finalists selected by the Scholarship Awards Committee may be contacted for a personal interview.
